Netflix is one of the most popular streaming services in the world, with more than 220 million subscribers. And just what do those people tend to watch? In particular, what is the most popular movie on Netflix?
Each week, the streaming service releases a list of its 10 most-watched movies over the preceding seven days. Below, we’ve listed the top 10 movies in the U.S. from January 16 to January 22, along with general information about each film, such as genre, rating, cast, and synopsis.
Before Transformers returns in 2023, revisit the second film in the live-action franchise, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Two years after saving the world with the Autobots, Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) attempts to have a normal life by attending college.
However, he’s thrust back into action when the Decepticons use the AllSpark to resurrect Megatron (voiced by Hugo Weaving) and set out to capture Sam and kill Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen). Sam, along with his girlfriend, Mikaela (Megan Fox), Optimus, and the Autobots team up to stop a Decepticon known as The Fallen (voiced by Tony Todd) from destroying the sun and life on Earth.
The third film in the Transformers live-action series, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, is the 2011 sequel to Revenge of the Fallen. It marks the return of Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf), who has graduated college and lives with his new girlfriend, Carly Spencer (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley). Like the previous two films, the Autobots, led by Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen), reengage with the Deceptions, led by Megatron (voiced by Hugo Weaving), in the battle for humanity.
Optimus decides to resurrect the former leader of the Autobots, Sentinel Prime (voiced by Leonard Nimoy), to put an end to the Deceptions once and for all. However, it sets off a series of events with catastrophic consequences, culminating in a giant battle in Chicago. It’s a Michael Bay movie, so expect a lot of loud explosions.
Who doesn’t love a good movie about going to a wedding? In the case of The Wedding Year, it’s multiple weddings. The film follows Mara Baylor (Sarah Hyland), a young woman whose biggest fear is commitment. Nonetheless, she begins a relationship with an ambitious chef (Tyler Williams), and the two hit it off.
The couple soon receives dozens of invites to future weddings over a year, and they agree to attend seven. During this time, Mara’s fear is exposed to Tyler, which causes some friction between the two. Like any good rom-com, the strength of The Wedding Year is the chemistry between the leads, Hyland and Williams.
After the events of 2016’s Sing, Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) and his friends are once again attempting to put on the greatest show in Redshore City.
To impress entertainment owner Jimmy Crystal (Bobby Cannavale), the crew proposes a show involving Clay Calloway (Bono), a once-famous rock star who became a recluse after his wife’s death. Now. it’s up to Buster and his cast to convince Clay to come out of hiding to headline their show.
Based on the Good Luck Trolls dolls comes the film adaptation, Trolls, which depicts the lives of small, lovable creatures. However, this happy lifestyle is interrupted when the Bergens, led by the cruel Chef (Christine Baranski), invade Troll Village and kidnap multiple trolls.
Princess Poppy (Anna Kendrick), an extremely happy troll, sets out on a quest to rescue her friends. She enlists the help of Branch (Justin Timberlake), a cautious survival troll who is the complete opposite of Poppy. The two trolls must find a way to work together before they lose their friends forever.
Christian Bale reunites with Scott Cooper (Out of the Furnace and Hostiles) for the mystery thriller, The Pale Blue Eye. In 1830, retired detective Augustus Landor (Bale) is summoned to West Point, New York, to investigate a death at the U.S. Military Academy. Landor learns that the heart was removed from the body, and the marks on the deceased cadet’s neck imply a murder took place.
Searching for answers, Landor receives help from Edgar Allen Poe (Harry Melling), a young military cadet who wants to solve the case. It’s the same Poe who will eventually become the legendary author of acclaimed works such as The Raven and The Fall of the House of Usher. The gothic mystery is full of twists and turns that will keep the audience guessing through the last frame.
The future is not so bright in JUNG_E. In the 22nd century, climate change has left Earth beyond devastated, forcing humans to live in compounds in outer space. Within the shelter, a civil war occurs, and the elite mercenary Yun Jung-Yi (Kim Hyun-Joo) becomes a war hero.
After a fatal accident leaves Jung-Yi in a vegetative state, a researcher clones her brain and develops an AI mercenary named JUNG_E. Yun Seo-hyun (Kang Soo-Yeon), the daughter of Jung-Yi, heads the JUNG-E project and is fighting to end the civil war. This marks the last appearance of Kang, who tragically died in May 2022.
After the success of 2019’s Knives Out, Rian Johnson is back with another mystery in the sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) invites his closest friends – Claire Debella (Kathryn Hahn), Lionel Toussaint (Leslie Odom Jr.), Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson), and Duke Cody (Dave Bautista) – to his mansion on a private island in Greece to take part in a murder mystery weekend.
Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) and Bron’s former partner, Cassandra “Andi” Brand (Janelle Monáe), also receive invites to Bron’s mansion, The Glass Onion. Although Bron stages a fake murder for the game, a real crime occurs, much to the shock of the guests. With Blanc on the scene, it’s up to the world’s greatest detective to solve another case.
If you were on the internet in 2013, you’ve probably seen the viral video of hitchhiking homeless man named Kai who came to the aid of a woman being attacked by a man. Later identified as Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, Kai used a hatchet to “smash, smash, smash” the man’s head and kill him. The video instantly went viral, but what happened next becomes a story for survival in The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker.
Months after the video went viral, Kai was arrested on murder charges for the death of a New Jersey attorney. The documentary explores the rise and fall of Kai as he finds himself serving a murder sentence for an incident he claims was self-defense.
Who doesn’t love a film about the search for a missing dog? Johnny Berchtold stars as Fielding Marshall, a college senior who rescues a lab named Gonker. The two form a loving relationship as they become best friends. On a hike on the Appalachian Trail, Gonker and Fielding become separated.
To make matters worse, Gonker needs medicine within the next 19 days to survive. In need of help, Fielding turns to his father, John (Rob Lowe), and the duo sets out to find the dog. The film is based on the 2016 heartwarming fact-based book by Pauls Toutonghi.
